Frequently Asked Questions
Overall Services
Q: What services does Mountain Man Fireplace & Chimney offer?
A: For nearly 30 years, we’ve provided expert chimney and fireplace services to Colorado’s mountain communities. Our in-house CSIA- and NFI-certified technicians specialize in chimney inspections, chimney sweeping, fireplace, insert, and stove repair, professional installation, and custom fireplace design for gas, wood-burning, and pellet appliances. Whether you need routine maintenance, a safety inspection, repairs, or a new fireplace installation, we’re committed to delivering exceptional craftsmanship, reliable service, and lasting peace of mind.
Q: What types of fireplaces and stoves do you service?
A: We service virtually all makes and models of gas, wood, and pellet fireplaces, stoves, and inserts. Whether you have a traditional wood-burning unit, a gas insert, or a pellet stove, our certified technicians can inspect, sweep, repair, or replace it.
Q: What is an Operational Assessment?
A: An Operational Assessment is our comprehensive diagnostic inspection for gas and pellet fireplaces, inserts, and stoves. Our certified technicians evaluate every critical component – including the gas valve, thermocouple, thermopile, igniter, burner, and safety controls – to verify proper operation and performance. We also perform a gas leak test to confirm the system is operating safely and efficiently.
Q: How much does chimney or fireplace service cost?
A: Pricing depends on your appliance type, the service required, and the level of inspection needed. Most services start at approximately $350. For an accurate quote tailored to your fireplace, insert, or stove, contact our Customer Care team, and we’ll be happy to recommend the right service and provide personalized pricing.
Q: Do you offer chimney sweeping services?
A:Yes. Every chimney sweeping service includes a Level 1 chimney inspection performed by our CSIA-certified chimney sweeps. We sweep the firebox, damper, smoke chamber, and chimney flue, remove soot and creosote buildup, inspect and brush the chimney cap, and access the roof to thoroughly evaluate the chimney system. Unlike some chimney companies, our technicians don’t limit the inspection to what can be seen from inside the home – we inspect the chimney exterior whenever conditions allow it to ensure a complete assessment.
Q: What areas do you service?
A: We proudly serve homeowners throughout Colorado’s Central Mountain Corridor and the western Denver metro area. Our service area includes Georgetown, Silver Plume, Idaho Springs, Evergreen, Conifer, Bailey, Fairplay, Golden, Arvada, Lakewood, Morrison, Littleton, Highlands Ranch, Centennial, and central Denver.
Q: Do you service pellet stoves?
A:Yes. Annual pellet stove maintenance includes the removal of all soot and ash from the firebox and its venting system. If your stove isn’t performing well, we run a complete Operational Assessment to check every component, and we carry replacement parts to resolve most issues on the spot.
Q: Do you work on gas stoves and fireplaces?
A: Yes. We diagnose and repair gas fireplaces, stoves, and inserts, including pilot and burner issues. Our Operational Assessment checks every component – thermocouple, thermopile, gas valve, and more – and we carry common replacement parts on our trucks to fix most problems during the same visit.
Q: What can I expect during a gas fireplace service?
A: A gas fireplace service includes a comprehensive Operational Assessment, which tests every critical component of your fireplace and includes a gas leak test to verify the appliance is operating safely and correctly. We also clean the logs, glass, burner, and other accessible components to improve performance, appearance, and reliability.
Inspections
Q: I just bought a home – how do I know my fireplace is safe to use?
A: For wood-burning fireplaces, inserts, or stoves, we will perform a chimney inspection before first use — we offer three inspection levels depending on your needs (see Chimney Inspection Levels). For gas or pellet appliances, we will perform an Operational Assessment or full service (see Gas & Pellet Service).
Q: What’s the difference between a Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 chimney inspection?
A: A Level 1 inspection covers the readily accessible parts of your chimney – the firebox, flue, and connections – and is recommended for routine annual maintenance. A Level 2 adds attic and crawl space access plus a video flue scan, and is used for real estate transactions, chimney fires, or appliance changes. A Level 3 goes further, removing components to access concealed areas when a serious hazard is suspected.
Q: I’m buying or selling a home – what inspection do I need?
A: A property transaction calls for a Level 2 chimney inspection. This includes everything in a Level 1 inspection, plus access to attics and crawl spaces and a video scan of the flue – this level is required by NFPA 211 guidelines for real estate transactions.
Q: How often should I have my chimney or stove inspected?
A: The Chimney Safety Institute of America recommends an annual inspection for all wood-burning, gas, and pellet appliances, regardless of how often you use them. Heavy wood-burning use may call for more frequent sweeping to clear soot and creosote buildup, while gas and pellet appliances typically need one annual service.
Q: When is the best time of year to schedule chimney or fireplace service?
A: Late spring through summer is the ideal time to schedule chimney, fireplace, or stove service. Booking before the fall rush gives you the best appointment availability, especially in Colorado’s mountain communities, where schedules fill quickly as heating season approaches. Scheduling early also provides plenty of time to complete any recommended repairs or maintenance before you rely on your fireplace or stove for warmth.
